In the hills south of the Friuli Collie Orientali DOC, where the ancient Gramogliano Castle once stood, now lies the Visintini family's vineyard and winery. The Visintini family still uses the 13th - century cellar to age their wine. Domenico Visintini bought the estate in 1884, and his son Umberto started farming in 1915. Over generations, they've built it into a certified organic and biodynamic winery. The Palmira Merlot, named after one of Domenico's great - grandchildren, grows in gravel soils 200m above sea level.
